About Us
Nature-based climate solutions to support communities and the environment
OUR MISSION
Sustinere assists rural communities in areas affected by deforestation and poverty to implement environmentally sustainable and profitable economic practices through reforestation, conservation and agroforestry. Our projects produce commodities from agroforestry for food security, health and commerce. We provide training to empower women, girls and aboriginal people, and produce sustainable forest biomass to be converted into renewable energy.
Help Us Recover Tropical Forests 🍀
Forests cover nearly a third of the planet’s landmass. Along with being home to many of the most endangered and threatened animals in the world, they provide fresh water, food, medicine, clothing and shelter to many of the world’s poor. In fact, of the 1.3 billion people worldwide who live in extreme poverty on less than $1.25 a day, forests directly contribute to 90 percent of their livelihoods. Forests also sequestrate carbon dioxide (CO2) and help regulate the global climate, as well as maintaining water and soil quality, rich biodiversity and fresh, clean air.
Deforestation is occurring globally at an alarming rate. In 2016, the global tree cover loss totaled an area about the size of New Zealand. As forests are destroyed, poor people – particularly women and girls – often lose access to the forest goods and services they depend on. Additionally, forest loss is pushing millions of indigenous peoples into extreme poverty, and causing unprecedented extinction of species (habitat loss for millions of species). Fewer forests also means larger amounts of carbon entering the atmosphere—and increased speed and severity of global warming.
Sustinere creates sustainable solutions that give low-income people the power to change their lives, while restoring the ecosystem and biodiversity that will sustain the many species of plants, animals, good soil, clean water and fresh air. We are a global community, changing the way the world tackles poverty and environmental degradation.
SUSTINERE IN THE NUMBERS
We believe reforestation and agro-forestry are the most powerful solutions in the world today, because they raise people out of poverty in a way that creates incentives for protecting the environment and engaging in green growth. The better care people take of the environment following one of our projects, the more benefits they get from the organic forest produce that we include on their land. It is a virtuous circle, and our projects also sequestrate carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, slowing down global warming. We believe every person deserves the choice to live with dignity, in a clean environment. Our projects place special focus on empowering women and girls, and Aboriginal populations. We have found that the more women and Aboriginal leaders are given the chance to lead, the greater the environmental and economic benefits and the more profound and lasting the transition to green growth. Ultimately, it’s the radical idea that we can have development that is sustainable and works for the poor. And it all starts with planting trees, right here right now, with your help.
